The History of the Mace Energy Method

by John Mace

The method is the practical component of Causism™, a revolutionary body of knowledge concerning human life. Its chosen name is a combination of two common English words:
1. Cause; to create an effect; to make things happen.
2. Ism; a doctrine, system or principle.

Before proceeding I wish to acknowledge the wisdom of one of histories greatest orators, Sir Winston Churchill. Among his famous statements are these words: “Never use a big word if a small word will do!” The essence of that simplistic statement is that optimum communication is achieved by being understood by as many of your listeners and readers as possible and not just a few linguistic peers. Experience has taught me that the quickest way to lose your audiences’ interest is to use words they do not understand. The importance of this realisation is harnessed when introducing new students, but I will not discus its implications here at this stage. However, with this factor in mind, please note that in defining Causism™, simple, readily understood English words are used instead of academic Greek or Latin.

On the subject of acknowledgements there are two others who deserve mentioning as integral to the research; my brother Eddie and John Avery. Their contribution appears later.

On the 25th of November 2013, after various versions over the years, the following was adopted as the initial statement to all new Mace Energy Method clients: “The method utilises the fact that feelings control our lives. They influence our attitudes; what we say, think and do and conversely what we do not say or do.” In hindsight and to be more explicit the word “decisions” should have been included because anything done or said is always preceded by a relevant decision.

Emotional feelings are of two types, negative or positive, in other words, non-survival and pro-survival. All such feelings are bodily manifestations of energy impinging on our physical body, so that negative energy causes negative feelings and vice versa. To simply demonstrate the fact that feelings control our lives is the example of fear, say fear of heights, which causes a sufferer to avoid climbing. On the physical plane, if your hand touches something that is very hot you immediately withdraw it because excessive heat is destructive for the body and pain is a danger signal. The urge for personal survival is manifested by the decision to withdraw the hand from the heat. Conversely, all pleasurable activity is pro-survival and there is probably nothing more basic than mutually agreeable sexual intercourse between the male of a species and the female. This is nature’s way of ensuring the survival of every species.

Early in the research, decisions were a major component in removing life’s negativities but when the sequence of events is analysed, all decisions are based upon pro-survival and or non-survival feelings. This puts feelings as the focal point in the game of survival and by eliminating unwanted feelings there is nothing remaining other than a void.

The words in bold script in the opening paragraph, utilising simple language, encompass the essence of probably the most profound discovery concerning human life ever made. The discovery encompasses both life’s activities and emotions. If there have been earlier similar discoveries, their existence has been lost together with earlier civilisations in the antiquity of time. This extremely bold statement will invariably cause those unfamiliar with Causism™ and its Mace method to immediately doubt its veracity and label it as gross egotism, because it challenges every extant procedure in emotional healing, as well as an understanding of life itself.

The history of the method goes back to an evening in 1959 when as a result of a mental exercise carried out under the guidance of my elder brother Eddie, I suddenly changed from a confirmed materialist to an even more confirmed spiritualist. This last word does not indicate membership of a particular group or practice but is used in its broadest sense of spiritual or personal awareness. One moment I was aware of sitting in a chair and the next moment I was not only aware of being out of my body but also exterior to the physical universe. My book “Turning upsets into positive energy” explains the incident in detail, so I will not repeat it here excerpt to say my life before and after the event is akin to chalk and cheese. That experience was a watershed in an awareness and understanding of life, devoid of religious or materialistic considerations. It gave me profound knowledge and understanding of life that is beyond words to describe. It was in essence, pure knowledge without barriers or limitations.

It was a second experience many years later, which introduced a practical dimension to my awareness, but the immediate result of this second and newfound awareness was the development of an intense interest in human behaviour to the extent that I resigned my position as a ship’s captain and using a maritime analogy, set my life on a new course, heading into the unknown over the horizon.

Initially I read copiously and then got trained in several methods regarding the human condition and the resolution of emotional problems, but each of them relied upon narrative and evaluation, in other words the client talking about their condition and experience under the guidance of their mentor. As research has since shown, narrative is at best a ‘band aid’ solution of limited value.

The second experience, as I have just said, occurred many years later in1995 when an old acquaintance, John Avery re-entered my life. There is no doubt that it was feeling safe to express my thoughts in his company that caused me to experience the second watershed event, when a mental image appeared as I endeavoured to explain a negative concept. The image was totally divorced from the concept I was trying to explain. Armed with current knowledge, the image was of course, simply the manifestation of energy in a physical form. Its mechanics are explained fully and utilised in the training manual. The use of the words ‘physical form’ is used because even a mental image has a degree of mass, otherwise it could not be seen. This incident is also discussed in my book, so I will not repeat it.

However, the sudden appearance of what was in reality a totally irrelevant mental image in regards to what I was discussing, apart from the fact that it appeared at all, turned my attitude to life and my understanding of it in our world upside down. Although John and I reversed our roles in order that I could not only share this newfound knowledge, but for me to also confirm its validity, I just knew that the key to a new understanding of life had been revealed to me. It also made me realise that all those hours of reading and using the work of others had maybe not been in vain, even though they were certainly all going down the wrong path in the search for the ultimate enlightenment.

Armed with this new understanding was one thing, but how to put it to practical maximum use was another thing altogether and it was not until very recently, about 15 years later that that dream was fully realised and I wrote ‘there is no-where else to go!”

The fact that it took all those years of dedicated research and development for Causism’s™ practical component to develop to what it today, is testament to what I wrote earlier, that knowing is one thing, but being aware of what you know is another thing altogether. This is borne out by the time it took for all the data or perhaps the truths buried in my psyche to emerge, and is demonstrated by my recurring use of the expression “out of the blue”. It was simply a slow trickle of knowledge emerging and certainly not a case of all the knowledge being offered on a gigantic platter. An example of this is found in the numerous “Tricks of the trade” found in the manual.

A major breakthrough in the efficacy and value of the Mace Energy Method was in the Productivity Procedure. Activity is fundamental to life and living, but an analysis of any activity revealed four distinct elements; decision, start, perseverance and recognition of its completion. To elaborate, some people are ditherers in that they cannot make decisions and figuratively flap around like a chicken with its head chopped off. Then there are those who having made a decision keep procrastinating about doing anything about it. The third element is the inability to persevere and finish a task so that they can be surrounded by unfinished tasks, such as a cluttered office desk covered with files or an overflowing ‘pending tray’. The final element is the recognition of completion. This is dramatised for example by a painter who is never satisfied with his creation and keeps touching up a picture. If there is one word, which underlies any problems with production it is procrastination, dramatised putting off making a decision, starting, continuing and even acknowledging completion. Maybe discussing and eliminating any tendency to procrastinate as a common theme may offer a short cut for the whole procedure, but I will leave it to others to experiment.

Each of the above elements impedes efficiency, so that their removal produces a vast improvement in personal efficiency and of course production, so that it is particularly beneficial in the business world.

A major breakthrough in the much wider use of the technology came in the form of Surrogacy. Surrogacy involves three people, a practitioner, a go-between (the surrogate) and the target, in other words the person being assisted who needs to eliminate some negative aspect of their make-up. Importantly, as is the case with a child who is too young to have a session, they are not involved in any way, not even an awareness of being the subject of the procedure, but nevertheless the practice of surrogacy produces some remarkable positive life changing outcomes.
Surrogacy is based upon the concept of a universal intelligence.

I first became aware of that concept when reading of “distant healing” as advocated and used by a fellow Reiki practitioner, but I was too engrossed in my own research to take heed. However, when the German practitioner Martina Becker mentioned her success of communicating with horses I decided to investigate the concept and today’s Surrogacy was borne. Sherrie Hatfield who has taken over my role as Senior Practitioner/Trainer International has developed the practice of surrogacy to a new level. Whereas initially it was accepted that the target had to be known by the surrogate, Sherrie has developed the procedure to the point that even a target known only by name can be helped. This is an insightful development for which Sherrie deserves full credit, for it not only augurs well for the Mace Energy Method in her hands, but for a vast extension and expansion of the reach of the method.

In life there are three universes; one’s own universe, the material universe and the energy universe, so what is meant by the word Universe? It actually has a multitude of definitions depending on the size if the dictionary, so it is probably best to define it as “That part of life of which we are personally aware”. In materialistic terms the energy universe is basic to life because it creates the material universe, so it appears to be senior or most important, but individuals are inherently units of awareness operating bodies, hence the term to define us as HUMAN ENERGY UNITS, so I will leave you the reader to decide who or what is the senior unit.

The life changing, ‘out if body experience’ of September 1959, now over 55 years ago, left me with the sense that I knew everything about life, so it takes a leap in understanding on the part of you the reader to accept that I was totally unaware of the extent of my knowledge. This is dramatically evident in that when discussing a research finding I often wrote “out of the blue” to indicate that the finding was not the result of some profound analysis of the issue at hand, but the contents of some deep well of knowledge that had been tapped.

The only exception apart from the ‘tricks of the trade’ that are only minor really was the realisation of what is called “the worst moment of an upset”. It was an analytical evaluation, only proved when first put into practice by others. It was based upon a simple fact; the word moment cannot be defined with accuracy because it contains no time. This is covered fully in the training manual under the logical heading, “The worst moment” but a few extra words are not out of place. As explained in the manual, an upsetting event can be experienced in time from over a few minutes to many months, so by saying ‘go to an upset’ there are probably a multitude of unwanted feelings involved, hence the importance of the follow-up statement, ‘go to the very worst moment’. If this is not used it can result in a drawn out handling of many unwanted feelings, whereas the feeling in the worst moment is life controlling and of unparalleled importance. This why it is recommended as the very first procedure applied to a new client, with the proviso that the worst moment is utilised.

The desire for gaining knowledge about life, in other words understanding the why’s and wherefore’s of life’s elements has been my motivation to develop Causism™ and a facet of that has been the driving force behind so many years of dedicated research and development.

Over the years I have abandoned many procedures, not so much that they were ineffective but that they were unnecessary as the result of refinements that produced the same result faster and cheaper. An example of this is to be found in our archives. The downside of this is that future practitioners may not acquire subjectve reality concerning the depth of the research, but it is of course almost impossible to know if a client will be a future practitioner or not. Most clients are happy with their newfound awareness of themselves and life.

I liken it to understanding an English language word that is based upon Greek or Latin routes, for example the word ‘augurs’ which I used above. Understanding the roots of a word give it a greater depth of understanding, but this view of course may only mirror my overriding interest in knowledge.
